Official DELF diploma (exam fee paid to the exam centre)

DELF is the official French language diploma that most learners in India take to prove their French for study, work or personal goals. If you are new to it, the questions are usually the same: what does DELF stand for, which level should you take, how much does it cost, and how hard is it? This guide answers each of them in one place, with 2026 fee details and a practical preparation plan.

What Is the DELF Exam?

DELF stands for Diplôme d'études en langue française. It is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the French skills of non-native speakers, and the exams are run by France Éducation international (FEI). In India, DELF is conducted through Alliance Française centres, including Chandigarh. Once you pass a level, the diploma does not expire.

  • Awarded by: the French Ministry of Education, administered by France Éducation international
  • Validity: the diploma is valid for life, unlike TEF Canada and TCF Canada results
  • Skills tested: listening, reading, writing and speaking, each as a separate paper
  • Format: taken in person at an authorised exam centre, not online

DELF Levels Explained: A1 to B2 (and DALF C1 and C2)

DELF has four independent diplomas aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The two advanced levels, C1 and C2, are awarded as DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française).

  • DELF A1 (beginner): use familiar everyday expressions, introduce yourself and ask simple questions
  • DELF A2 (elementary): handle routine tasks, describe your background and talk about past events in simple terms
  • DELF B1 (intermediate): deal with most situations while travelling or working, give opinions and explain plans and reasons
  • DELF B2 (upper-intermediate): follow complex texts, argue a point of view and interact fluently. This is the level most French-taught degree programmes ask for, though requirements vary by university
  • DALF C1 and C2 (advanced to near-native): used for high-level academic and professional purposes

DELF Exam Pattern and Passing Marks

Every DELF level tests the same four skills, each as its own paper: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production and spoken production. Each paper is scored out of 25, which makes a total of 100.

  • Passing mark: at least 50 out of 100 overall, and at least 5 out of 25 in every paper
  • Listening: recorded audio with questions, with longer and faster recordings as the level rises
  • Reading: short everyday texts at A1 and A2, longer articles at B1 and B2
  • Writing: short messages at A1 and A2, a structured opinion or letter at B1, an argued essay or formal letter at B2
  • Speaking: a short guided interview at A1 and A2, moving to a prepared presentation and discussion at B1 and B2
  • Approximate time: about 1.5 hours of written papers at A1, rising to about 2.5 hours at B2, plus a separate speaking test

Check the Official Guide

Timings and task types are set by the exam body and can be updated. Read the official exam guide and sample papers for your level before you start preparing.

DELF Exam Fees in India (2026)

DELF exam fees in India are set nationally and published each year by Alliance Française. The 2026 rates below include GST.

  • DELF A1 and A2: ₹11,210 for external candidates
  • DELF B1 and B2: ₹13,265 for external candidates
  • DALF C1 and C2: ₹14,553 for external candidates
  • Candidates enrolled at an Alliance Française pay a lower rate, roughly ₹7,300 to ₹8,800 for A1 to B2

Exam Fee vs Coaching Fee

The exam fee is paid to the exam centre and is separate from any coaching fee. Fees are revised periodically, so confirm the current amount with Alliance Française Chandigarh before you register.

DELF Exam Dates, Registration and Centres in India

DELF is a national exam in India, so written papers are held on the same dates across Alliance Française centres, and each centre schedules the speaking test within about a week of those dates. There are several sessions a year, and each registration window is short.

  • Check the exam calendar of your nearest centre. Learners in the Tricity can start with Alliance Française de Chandigarh
  • Register within the announced window, since late applications are generally not accepted
  • Pay the exam fee to confirm your seat
  • Carry the photo ID your centre specifies and check your exam timings and room before the day

Register Early

Windows can close within about two weeks. For example, Alliance Française de Delhi opened registration for its September 2026 session on 17 August and closed it on 31 August, with written papers from 15 to 19 September. Seats can also be limited: the June 2024 session at Alliance Française de Chandigarh listed just six seats per level.

Who Can Take DELF? Eligibility and Choosing Your Level

There is no prerequisite diploma for DELF. You can register for any level directly: you do not need A1 to sit A2, or B1 to sit B2. Adults and young adults usually take DELF Tout Public, while DELF Prim and DELF Junior exist for children and school students. Age rules can differ slightly by centre, so check before you register.

  • Complete beginner: start with A1, then plan A2
  • Comfortable with basics but hesitant when speaking: A2
  • Can speak and write simple opinions: B1
  • Need French for a degree in France: check the level your programme asks for, which is most often B2

Test Your Level First

Do a level check before you pay the exam fee. Registering one level too high is an expensive way to find out where you actually are.

Is the DELF Exam Easy?

DELF tests whether you can use French at the level you register for, so the answer depends on the level. A1 and A2 are manageable for most beginners after structured study. The jump comes at B1 and B2, where writing an organised opinion and speaking without notes carry as much weight as understanding. Because you need at least 5 out of 25 in every paper, one weak skill can fail you even when your total is above 50, so prepare all four skills evenly.

How to Prepare for the DELF Exam

  • Take a level check to choose the right exam level
  • Download the official exam guide and sample papers for your level and read the task instructions closely
  • Listen to French audio daily, starting with slow, clear recordings and moving to news and interviews
  • Write one short piece a week in the format your level requires, and get it corrected by a tutor
  • Practise speaking aloud, record yourself and review fluency and pronunciation with feedback
  • Sit at least two full timed mock papers in the last weeks, and review your score paper by paper

Study Tip

Official sample papers are the best free resource. What they cannot do is correct your writing and speaking, which are the papers candidates find hardest to judge on their own.

DELF Results and Certificate

Results are not instant. Centres announce them some weeks after the exam: the September 2026 session at Alliance Française de Delhi, for example, listed its result date about a month after the written papers. You are scored out of 25 in each paper, and you pass with at least 50 out of 100 and no paper below 5. A passed diploma is valid for life. How results and diplomas are issued differs by centre, so ask your centre.

DELF vs DALF, TEF and TCF

DELF and DALF are two halves of one system: DELF covers A1 to B2 and DALF covers C1 and C2. TEF Canada and TCF Canada are separate tests built for immigration.

DELF Is Not Accepted for Express Entry

IRCC accepts only TEF Canada and TCF Canada as French tests for Express Entry. If Canada PR is your goal, DELF is the wrong exam, and you should prepare for TEF or TCF instead.

  • DELF/DALF: lifetime diploma, used for study, work and personal certification
  • TEF Canada / TCF Canada: scored against Canadian language benchmarks, results valid for 2 years, used for immigration

Is the DELF Exam Worth It?

It is worth it when it matches your goal. A DELF diploma never expires, it is the standard proof of French for many French-taught university programmes, and employers recognise it. At ₹11,210 to ₹13,265 for external candidates, it is a real investment, so choose the level by your goal rather than by guesswork, and pick TEF or TCF if your goal is Canadian immigration.

Conclusion

DELF is a lifetime French diploma with four independent levels, a clear pass mark and a short registration window. Check your level, read the official guide, register as soon as the window opens and practise all four skills evenly. If you want structured help, our live online batches follow the exam paper by paper.
